Florin Marin - Foam of the Days
In the beginning was the foam. That’s where goddess rose from, and she brought art and artists into the world. However, in time, that strange and paradoxical matter has preserved the same power to captivate creators: fragile yet persistent, soft or inflexible, compact, yet full of holes, expansive yet absorbent, geometrically structured yet amorphous, a 3D miniature stained glass. An entire unexplored philosophy of the foam awaits its genial theoreticians. Meanwhile, contemporary artists play with various states of these new materials.
Florin Marin approaches foam/sponge with the gestures of a sculptor, yet bearing the vision of a landscape painter. The result is a series of delicate bas-reliefs, enigmatic landscapes or small worlds presented in a way that illustrates the tradition of dioramas. Facing these suggesting ambiances that are altogether subtly abstract, the viewer can choose to shape his or her perspective under two different angles: frontal, thus following a classic perspective, seeing the landscape within the imaginary boundaries of the frame ; or from above, as seen from a flight over those landforms. The artist manages to identify the force in the shape, to challenge it and to take it out of its hiding. At the same time, this is a sculpture which uses soft, delicate, carnal matter, as opposed to bronze, stone or clay. Florin Marin reopens “the Alberti’s window”, but the image in it is no longer completely mimetic and rather becomes a space where one can play, a vanishing point leading to a different realm.

La început a fost spuma. Din ea s-a născut zeiţa, care la rândul ei a adus pe lume arta şi artiştii. Însă materia aceea ciudată şi contradictorie a păstrat aceeaşi putere de fascinaţie pentru creatori: fragilă dar persistentă, când moale, când rigidă, compactă dar plină de goluri, expansivă dar absorbantă, structurată strict geometric dar totuşi amorfă, un vitraliu 3D în miniatură. O întreagă filozofie neexplorată a spumei îşi aşteaptă teoreticienii de geniu. Intre timp, artiştii contemporani se dedau fără reţineri jocului cu diferitele forme de manifestare ale noilor materiale.
Florin Marin se apropie de spumă/burete cu gesturi de sculptor, dar cu o viziune de peisagist. Rezultă o serie de basoreliefuri delicate, privelişti enigmatice sau mici lumi prezentate sub o formă ce aminteşte de tradiţia dioramelor. In faţa acestor ambienturi sugerate dar şi subtil abstracte, privitorul poate alege să-şi orienteze perspectiva sub două unghiuri diferite: frontal, într-o vizualizare de tip „peisaj clasic”, perceput prin fereastra imaginară a ramei, sau planant, observat ca dintr-un zbor deasupra formelor de relief. Artistul reuşeşte să identifice forţa din interiorul formei, să o provoace şi să o scoată din ascundere. In acelaşi timp e o sculptură care lucrează cu o materie moale, delicată, cu o textură carnală, spre deosebire de bronz, piatră sau lut. Florin Marin redeschide „fereastra albertiană”, dar ceea ce apare dincolo de ea nu mai e chiar mimetic, ci un spațiu de joc, un punct de fugă către altceva și altundeva.
